7. “FRAMING MAORI” DOCUMENTARY ON TV1 THIS SATURDAY

TV One, Saturday 21st October 0930am

A half hour documentary in the “He Matapaki” series: Journalist Tere Harrison turns the camera on television news-makers in her personal evaluation of mainstream reporting of Maori issues.

When custodians of Te Tii Marae issued a media ban during the 2004 Waitangi commemorations, it highlighted the level of cynicism among many Maori toward the media and it’s ability to report Maori issues.  Kaumatua of Te Tii accused the media of fuelling confrontation and expressed little faith in the media to provide an accurate portrayal of the days events. Seventy percent of New Zealanders cite television news as their main source of information, and the media has significant potential to impact on race relations in New  Zealand . Maori are becoming increasingly concerned the media is unable, and more concerning, disinclined to provide a Maori perspective.  Media bans by Maori groups, and recent aggression shown toward the media by some Maori and are indicators that Maori recognise the importance of the Media and are concerned that greater understanding is needed.

Tere Harrison is an experienced Maori journalist with some serious concerns about the reporting of Maori issues in New Zealand ’s mainstream Media – particularly television news. She begins her first person, authorial style documentary with clear statements of her point of view and intentions in the programme:  “ Television is the main source of news for most New Zealanders. It has enormous power to shape our view of the world. As a journalist I’m concerned about how mainstream news portrays Maori…This programme is my look at how mainstream media frames Maori news, what I think is wrong with it, why it’s like that and how it can improve.”

In the half hour programme Tere talks to media commentators and turns the camera on news makers.

The premise of this evaluative documentary is that, despite a veneer of objectivity, news reporting is, in fact, unavoidably subjective - informed by newsmakers’ personal backgrounds: their cultural perspectives, their knowledge base, their experiences and opinions. The documentary therefore challenges notions of journalistic objectivity and is openly subjective in a manner rarely seen on New Zealand television “Framing Maori” is a statement on the need for culturally informed news reporting, and the need for a strong Maori voice in mainstream media.  The overall aim is to alert viewers to the need for critical analysis when reading, listening to, or viewing any media presentations.

11. CALL FOR ENTRIES REMINDER: WET WEST FILM FESTIVAL

Hokitika’s third annual film festival, the Wet West Film Festival is now open for entries for the 2007 event.  This year, the organisers are calling for both the emerging and well established New Zealand film maker to enter their watery tale, for screening in early January.

“All films must refer to the Festival theme of water, but can add imagination to that, using it in any of its forms, we’d even get the link with a desert film!  It’s not so much about limiting story types, as focussing the story telling,” says Jo Kearns, co festival director.  Competing films enter into the categories of Adventure and Expedition, Culture and Environment, Best Adrenaline Film, Best Short Film and Best Amateur Film.  Also, the audience votes for the People’s Choice Award, while the panel of judges decide on the Judge’s Choice.  All winners receive a unique, sculpted trophie by award winner carver James Washer, using local materials such as pounamu, native timber and ardulite.

Entries are welcome from now until 31 October with all details and entry forms available on the website.

The four days of screening runs from 4th- 7th January, with between 40 and 50 films hitting two big screens in Hokitika, one at the grand old Regent Theatre (seating 350) and the other the wonderful leather lounge style DVD theatre the Crooked Mile (seating an intimate 30).  For all Wet West Film Festival info see www.wetwestfilmfest.com

12. NEW ZEALAND FILMMAKERS INVITED TO APPLY FOR AUSTRALIAN FILM LAB

The IndiVision Project Lab is a high-level professional workshop for six to eight creative teams, with leading local and international advisers on script, performance, cinematic storytelling, and production. Designed to inspire innovative approaches to low-budget feature filmmaking, the lab emphasises the importance of simultaneously developing the script, the director's vision and the production methodology. The lab is aimed at filmmakers with a high or mid-range level of experience who are developing a low-budget feature. As well as intensive script sessions at the lab, directors workshop their scripts with actors, producers have sessions on their budgets and financing plans, and the teams meet with distributors and successful filmmakers who have succeeded in the low budget realm.

If a New Zealand project is selected, the team will receive funding for a draft to follow up on the workshop, have the opportunity to attend a further workshop focusing on financing and marketing low-budget features, and have the opportunity to apply for a travel grant to pitch their project overseas in the wake of that workshop. Projects submitted to the lab can be any genre, including horror, thriller, romantic comedy, sci-fi, comedy, fantasy, musical, and action adventure, as long as they are outstanding and distinctive. They can also be aimed at any audience, including children, youth, family, niche, arthouse and mainstream. Projects must be able to be realised for a budget not exceeding A$2 million.

New Zealand teams may apply to the NZFC by 5pm on Tuesday 24 October 2006. Any team may apply; however, preference will be given to projects already in development with the Commission, and/or that are developed enough to demonstrate their potential as feature films.

13. CALL FOR ENTRIES: 12TH SXSW FILM FESTIVAL

The 14th annual South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival (SxSW)  which runs March 9-17, 2007 in Austin Texas, is now accepting submissions from filmmakers until December 8.  SxSW screens the best in new independent film from around the world and is eager to continue its tradition of spotlighting great Kiwi talent.  Over 180 films will screen in 2007 at a variety of venues.

In recent years, the film festival has boosted its exposure to Australian and New Zealand features and shorts in particular. "There are so many great films coming from this part of the world," says Festival Producer Matt Dentler, "And we hope to expand on the programming coming from filmmakers in Australia and New Zealand ."  A special 'sidebar' event for AustralAsian films entitled 'Discoveries From Down Under' debuted in 2004.  Recent films featured include "Puppy", "Somersault", "Thunderstruck", "Josh Jarman", "Alexandra's Project," "Black and White", "Undead" and "Welcome to the Waks Family".   2007 should be even bigger!

Films screen in the following categories:  Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Short, Animated Short, Experimental Short, and Music Video.  Submissions can be made online at www.sxsw.com/film/submit which also has a FAQ section.

You decide which category is appropriate for a film, keeping in mind...

   - to qualify as a short, your film must be 40 minutes or less

    - experimental shorts are those with NO narrative thread

Entries can be submitted on NTSC VHS video tape or Region 1 compatible DVDs. (SxSW cannot play PAL videos or DVDs.) Please be sure to label the spine of your DVD or video with your film's title.  The Festival will screen on 35mm and HDCam.

The early deadline is November 17, 2006 (postmark date) with a processing fee of US$25 for shorts and US$35 for features, rising US$10 for each category from November 18 to December 8th's closing date.  For submission information, please go to www.sxsw.com/film/submit.

In its 14th year, SXSW is ranked #6 on the list of the top 10 film festivals in the world in Chris Gore's recently released Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide (3rd Edition).  In addition, SXSW is listed as the #2 U.S. film festival for American independents.

AustralAsian representative Phil Tripp is hoping that industry and government involvement in the SxSW Film Festival as well as the Conference and Trade Fair Exhibition will mirror the success of the music industry at SxSW Music & Media Festival which has increased its attendance eight-fold since 2002 to 200 delegates in 2006 from when Austrade & Trade NZ invested in the event four years ago.  The NZ Music Industry Commission has had a stand for each year. "The SxSW Music Festival had over 50 Australian & NZ artists invited to play in 2006, combined with a massive stand and special events that the film industry can emulate by positioning itself at this crucial event's film side" Tripp states.  "We know that film creators, industry professionals and those working to bring productions to NZ can benefit greatly by participating in SxSW 2007."

For further information, contact Phil Tripp at IMMEDIA! on (02) 9557 7766 tripp@sxsw.com

The 2007 Berlinale Talent Campus will focus on a current and burning theme addressed by world cinema: the search for cultural identity in a global –and globalized– film business. The sense of being “at home”, whether by choice or by circumstance, can have an enormous influence on the path of a filmmaker’s project.

For more information and the application to the Campus go to http://www.berlinale-talentcampus.de. Young producers, directors, actors, cinematographers, screenplay writers, editors, production designers, film score composers and sound designers are encouraged to apply.
