Butt Why?

TV ONE 28th October Saturday 9.30am

Kiwa Media presents Butt Why? A half hour Documentary produced for TVNZ under He Matapaki series.

This program looks at the possible reasons why there are disproportionate numbers of Maori women addicted to tobacco.
Maori Women have occupied the dire tobacco statistics for far too long. They currently have the highest rate of lung cancer in the world and are the group most addicted to tobacco in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The question is why is it Maori women and not any other group that continue to be hooked to such a destructive product? After all, since the 1980’s the government have been making an effort to highlight the health problems associated with tobacco. Do Maori women not care about their health or are the health messages just not specifically targeted to them? Does the Government really want to rid this product or are they themselves addicted to the monetary gain and industry pressure? History is examined through the experience of 80yr old Kiritapu Wilson who speaks to the decades of Tobacco influence on her life and those around her.
